Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that uses a lighted camera called a hysteroscope,which is inserted through the natural opening of the uterus,the cervix,to visualise inside the uterus
This helps to see inside and treat if any pathology is found.
Hysteroscopy is done in many gynaecological conditions like
Uterine abnormalities, such as a uterine septum
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Bleeding after menopause
Fibroids or polyps
Infertility
Recurrent pregnancy loss
Removal of an IUD or other foreign object
Taking a tissue sample (biopsy)
Removing intrauterine adhesions
There are two types of hysteroscopy–Diagnostic hysteroscopy and operative hysteroscopy
Diagnostic means finding out the cause of any disease like abnormal bleeding or infertility
Inoperative hysteroscopy additional procedures are done to treat the pathology found,like resection of a uterine septum or removal of endometrial polyp or submucosal fibroid.
Hysteroscopy is generally a very safe procedure and the patient can return to work in a day.
