Frequently Asked Questions

What is gynecologic laparoscopy?
  • Laparoscopic surgery, commonly known as keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where small cuts are made in the abdomen and camera is inserted through these cuts to visualise and operate on,the internal organs.
  • During a laparoscopy, the surgeon makes two to four small incisions in the abdomen, each five to ten millimeters in length and the laparoscope and other small tools are inserted into the patient’s body through these tiny cuts.
  • The camera in the laparoscope is connected to a video monitor and the surgeon operates by seeing the monitor.
  • A wide range of conditions affecting the female reproductive organs can be treated by way of laparoscopic surgeries. This includes the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other nearby organs.
How is laparoscopy performed?

A surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen,of around 1cm and inserts the laparoscope and other surgical tools. The surgeon can see magnified images of the internal organs on a video monitor connected through the scope.

  • This enables the surgeon to see the images in a larger view.
What all gynaecological conditions can be treated through laparoscopy?

Almost all gynaecological conditions can be dealt with by laparoscopic procedure.

This include uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian cysts and some cancers too.

A few surgeries performed laparoscopically are;

  • Laparoscopic sterilisation
  • Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy
  • Total laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic endometriotic adhesiolysis
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy
What are the benefits of laparoscopy?
  • Faster recovery: Patients often experience a shorter recovery time and less pain.
  • During the operation, laparoscope helps to magnify images that allows the doctor to see the operation in significantly more detail than with only the naked eye, which means that the doctor can execute the operation with a higher level of precision
  • Financial benefits;shorter hospital stay and faster recovery means patients can return to their normal life earlier thus reducing the time off from work and less financial burden.
  • Cosmetic benefits: Patients experience less scarring than with open surgery.
  • Reduced risk of complications: There’s a reduced risk of wound complications like infection , hernias, reduced rate of post operative thrombosis.
post operative adhesions are very far compared to open surgeries , so repeated surgeries will be easier
what are the risks of laparoscopic surgeries?

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with laparoscopic surgery.

What is hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that uses a lighted camera called a hysteroscope, which is inserted through the natural opening of the uterus, the cervix,to visualise inside the uterus.

This helps to see inside and treat if any pathology is found.Hysteroscopy is done in many gynaecological conditions like;

  • Uterine abnormalities, such as a uterine septum
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Infertility
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Removal of an IUD or other foreign object
  • Taking a tissue sample (biopsy)
  • Removing intrauterine adhesions

What is the difference between diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy?

  • There are two types of hysteroscopy–Diagnostic hysteroscopy and operative hysteroscopy
  • Diagnostic means finding out the cause of any disease like abnormal bleeding or infertility.
  • Inoperative hysteroscopy additional procedures are done to treat the pathology found, like resection of a uterine septum or removal of endometrial polyp or submucosal fibroid.
  • Hysteroscopy is generally a very safe procedure and the patient can return to work in a day.
Is laparoscopic surgery as safe as open surgery?

All types of surgery carry certain risks and laparoscopy is not an exception such as excessive bleeding or damage to nearby organs, for example, the bladder, ureter or the large intestine. In the hands of an expert surgeon, with proper patient selection and pre operative assessment, the associated risks of laparoscopic surgery are no different from those with open surgery.
